Baghdad – In a surprising statement made during a recent press conference, Iraq’s Minister of Transport, Kazem Finjan al-Hamami, claimed that the ancient Sumerians launched spaceships into space around 7,000 years ago.
Speaking in the southern city of Dhi Qar, near the archaeological remains of the ancient Sumerian city of Ur, the minister asserted that the region was once “the center of space exploration” in ancient times. He referred to research “conducted by Iraqi and international experts” as the basis for his claims, though he did not cite any specific scientific sources.
According to al-Hamami, the Sumerians developed advanced technology that enabled them to travel to other planets long before the modern space age. He also suggested that remnants of this ancient space technology might still lie buried beneath historical sites in southern Iraq.
The statement quickly drew widespread attention and criticism from academics and the public alike. Archaeologists and historians responded with skepticism, emphasizing that no credible evidence exists to support the notion of Sumerian space travel. Experts point out that while the Sumerians made remarkable contributions in fields such as writing, mathematics, and astronomy, there is no archaeological record suggesting they had any form of advanced aerospace technology.
The minister’s remarks come at a time when Iraq is striving to promote its rich historical and cultural heritage, though some observers caution against blending mythology with science. So far, there has been no official response from the Iraqi government to clarify or support the minister’s claims.
