A resident of the greater Reykjavik area has reported an unusual aerial sighting to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), drawing interest from both the public and those who study unexplained phenomena.
According to the testimony, submitted on April 8, 2025, a bright white light—roughly the size of a car—was seen hovering and moving rapidly just above the ocean’s surface off the coast of Alftanes, in the municipality of Garðabær.
The observer, who lives in a home just 20 meters from the coastline, described the object as a diamond- or star-shaped light gliding silently at a low altitude, estimated to be only a few meters above the water. "It appeared to be levitating, never touching the sea or the ground, and moved without any sound or friction," the witness reported.
The sighting occurred at 10:22 p.m. local time and lasted for approximately two minutes. Initially seen from inside the house while chatting with a spouse, the witness rushed outside and tracked the object for about 60 seconds until it turned inland and disappeared from view. “It maneuvered over rocks and made sharp turns in ways no known vessel or vehicle could. It moved effortlessly, as if floating,” the witness added.
What struck the observer most was the complete silence of the object, despite its speed—estimated between 60 and 80 km/h—and proximity. “There was no sound coming from it, none whatsoever.”
The sighting didn’t go unnoticed by others. Neighbors in a nearby villa reportedly came to their windows to observe the mysterious light, lending additional credibility to the account.
So far, no official explanation has been provided. Reykjavik Airport has reported no unusual air traffic in the area during that time, and local authorities have not yet issued any statements.
Though sightings of unexplained aerial phenomena are rare in Iceland, the country’s wide open skies and remote landscapes have occasionally served as a backdrop for mysterious encounters. This incident, detailed with exceptional clarity, adds a new entry to Iceland’s relatively quiet UFO record.
Whether natural, technological, or something else entirely, the nature of the object remains unknown. For now, the residents of Alftanes are keeping an eye on the horizon.
