An unidentified light observed in 1911 in Australia

On Tuesday, May 23, 1911, in the evening, several witnesses noticed a mysterious light above the town of Nambour, in the south-east of the State of Queensland, Australia…

Here is the newspaper article published in 1911 in The Brisbane Courier:

The strange light said to have been noticed at Nambour on Tuesday evening, as reported in Thursday's "Courier," was seen here by Constable Rayner and his wife (writes our Toogoolawah correspondent) Mr. Rayner states that at about 8 o'clock his attention was attracted to a bright light in the north-west sky, about 45 degrees above the horizon ; it appeared to be about 30 ft long and 6 or 8 inches wide, of about the brilliancy of the evening star, and was moving slowly towards the north-east. The brightness lasted three or four minutes when it faded considerably, the shape changing meanwhile to a right angle afterwards to a semi-circle with its points upwards.

After the last alteration of shape it could only be discerned by close scrutiny of the heavens, and then it disappeared from view whilst some 25 degrees above the horizon in the north-east. According to Mr Rayner's calculations, the object took about 15 or 20 minutes to cross the sky.
