1961: Yuri Gagarin makes the first manned space flight

On April 12th, 1961, Yuri Gagarin made history by becoming the first human to venture into outer space. His mission aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft lasted just 108 minutes, but it marked a significant milestone in the history of space exploration and cemented the Soviet Union's dominance in the Space Race.

Born in the small village of Klushino in western Russia, Gagarin was the son of a carpenter and grew up helping on his family's farm. Despite his humble beginnings, Gagarin had a passion for aviation and dreamed of becoming a pilot from a young age.

After completing his military service, Gagarin enrolled in a technical college to study aviation. He later joined the Soviet Air Force and became a fighter pilot, where he quickly earned a reputation as a skilled and daring aviator.

In 1960, the Soviet Union launched a program to send a human into space, and Gagarin was selected as one of 20 candidates. After a rigorous selection process, he was chosen as the primary candidate for the mission, thanks in part to his small stature (which allowed him to fit comfortably inside the cramped Vostok spacecraft).

On the morning of April 12th, 1961, Gagarin blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The launch was a success, and Gagarin spent the next hour and a half orbiting the Earth, floating weightlessly and observing the planet from a perspective that no human had ever seen before.

Gagarin's safe return to Earth made him an instant hero in the Soviet Union and a symbol of the country's technological and scientific prowess. He received numerous accolades and was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Tragically, Gagarin's life was cut short just seven years later when he was killed in a plane crash during a routine training flight. However, his legacy as the first human to journey into space remains a testament to his bravery and the incredible achievements of the Soviet space program.
